Ancient Civilizations Syllabus

Sixth Grade History Content Standards
Students in grade six expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special significance in the development of the human story. The students will also develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, and why they declined.
Ancient Civilization Units:
- Mapping Skills
- Early Human Societies
- Ancient Mesopotamia
- Ancient Egypt
- Ancient Hebrews
- Ancient India
- Ancient China
- Ancient Greece
- The Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome
- Discussion of Current Events and Linking the Past & Present (year round)
Grading Policy
- grades will be based on homework, classwork and tests
- there will be extra credit opportunities each quarter
- late work will be penalized and will be worth only half-credit (unless there is a valid excuse)
- late work will be accepted until the end of the quarter
Textbook
- students will be issued a history textbook to take home for the year
- students will be held responsible for lost or damaged textbooks

Procedures
Beginning of Class:
- be ready with your materials
- sharpen your pencil before class, not during
- talking is not allowed during bulletin announcements
- you must be in your assigned seat when the bell rings
During Class:
- stay on task
- keep your hands to yourself
- bullying and foul language is unacceptable
- you may ask for permission to borrow
- raise your hand for permission to ask a question or give an answer
- writing in/on any textbooks/desks is not allowed
- items such as cell phones, toys, cards, combs, personal reading materials, etc. will be taken away
- food/gum are not allowed in class unless given permission
- you may use the restroom, but excessive bathroom breaks will be noted
- if classwork is completed early, you may have free time to read, draw, or work on other homework
Assignments:
- record all assignments in your Binder Reminder
- if you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for the assignments you missed
- if you are absent on the day an assignment is collected, you must turn it into Ms. Simonian the next time
- you come to class to receive full credit
- turn in all late work directly to the “Late” box
- assignments worked on at inappropriate times will be taken and not returned
End of Class:
- all books/materials/desks/chairs must be returned to their proper place
- no paper/trash/textbooks on the floor or on your desk
- remain in your seat until you are dismissed by me, not the bell
Consequences
- exclusion from class activities
- detention/Saturday School/suspension
- call home/parent-teacher-student conference
- receiving a “U” (unsatisfactory) on your report card for your citizenship grade
